The black stork (Ciconia nigra), is a bird with very reduced populations in the interior of the Iberian Peninsula, where it is catalogued as a vulnerable species, by the latest Atlas and Red Book of the Breeding Birds of Spain, published by the Ministry of the Environment.

The species is present as a breeder within the scope of the project, the southwest of Salamanca and the extreme north of Extremadura being one of the most important areas for this species in the whole of the Iberian Peninsula.
