Buitreras de Gata: 600 hectares in Sierra de Gata

The property rights of the Biological Reserve Sierra de Gata belong to the Asociación para la Defensa de la Naturaleza y los Recursos de Extremadura (ADENEX) in collaboration with Fundación Naturaleza y Hombre. It is located in the municipality of Descargamaría in the LIC (SAC) and ZEPA  (SPA) Sierra de Gata Sierra de Gata and Valle de las Pilas.

The reserve hosts important populations of Narcissus pseudonarcissus nobilis y Festuca summilusitana. The most remarkable value lies in the presence of 42 black vulture nests, assuming a crucial core population at national level.

Sierra de Gata is the most western Mountain Mass of the Central System in Spanish territory. Its highest peak is Peña Canchera at 1,592 m above sea level and its predominant lithology are the slates and small granite outcrops. Pyrenean oak forests covering the slopes of the Sierra are remarkable.
