The more Atlantic climate in the highlands makes possible the development of patches of Pyrenean oak on large surfaces, distributed, not continuously, from the foot of the Sierra de France to Navasfrias, both located in Salamanca, and penetrating into the Sierra de Malcata in Portugal. The chestnut trees are also frequent. In the shrub layer are rowan, holly and maple. Larger terrestrial vertebrates have their largest populations in hills and mountains. The highest densities of deer, wild boar or roe deer are found in these habitats.
