Monfragüe National Park is located in the province of Caceres (Extremadura) and has an area of 18,396 ha. The statement came as a National Park in 1979 through Royal Decree 1927/1979, of 4 April. Later the area has also been declared a Special Protection Area (1991), Special Area of Conservation (1998) and included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 2003. This set of conservation measures have helped maintain and improve largely natural, scenic and cultural richness of the area.
Monfragüe National Park has one of the best representation of the Mediterranean forest, showing, however, bioclimatic shades of Atlantic and continental character. Some of these enclaves are confined to the mountain and riverside areas, alternating in an agrarian landscape transformed by the traditional uses and exploitations.
Although, the Mediterranean forest of oaks is those that characterize the space with a characteristic vegetation of the temperate zones and Mediterranean area; along the area Monfragüe we find also gallery forests, ash groves, junipers, oleanders, tamujares, bulrushes and cut rocky.
In this sense, this geographical location favors the presence of numerous birds of community interest: eagle owl, black vulture, Egyptian vulture, black stork and short-toed eagle, among others. There are also three bats record: Medium horseshoe bat, bat and bat big cave buzzard; and a rodent, the vole of Cabrera.
