THE JUYO CAVE AREA
This reserve is managed as a result of an agreement between the Camargo Town Hall, the Igollo Neighbourhood Council and the Fundación Naturaleza y Hombre.
The Paraje de la Cueva del Juyo Reserve belongs to the town of Igollo de Camargo in the Juyo neighborhood. The town is located 35 meters above sea level, and 3.6 kilometers away from the municipal capital, Muriedas. To the north and west of the area are the roads N-611 and A-67 and to the south lies the Peña Negra or Carral.
The cave of El Juyo is one of the main Palaeolithic sites in Cantabria, and also one of the best known and, without doubt, the main monument in the town of Igollo. This cave is considered, by some archaeologists, to be the oldest sacred place in the world.
The environment surrounding the cave of “El Juyo” and the vicinity of the town of Igollo is characterized by the existence of a patch of Cantabrian holm oak that is intermingled with the eucalyptus trees that are located on the vertical of the cave’s vaults. The uncontrolled growth of the roots, mainly of the eucalyptus, means that the humidity conditions of the cave are being substantially modified.
