EL MONTERÍN
This reserve is managed as a result of an agreement between the Camargo Town Hall, the Igollo Neighbourhood Council and the Fundación Naturaleza y Hombre.
The Monterín Reserve is located in the municipality of Camargo, in the town of Igollo. It is linked to the Monte de Peñas Negras, located between Santa Cruz de Bezana, Camargo and Piélagos. In addition, the eastern area of Monterín is delimited by the Cantera de la Verde. To the south, we find the town of Camargo and to the west, the town of Maoño.
This is the natural union of small limestone hills in which a Cantabrian holm oak forest in an excellent state of conservation is located. The Monterín is the largest representation of a relict holm oak forest in Camargo; the area also has important limestone karst formations. Pioneering vegetation can take root inside the ridges when some sediment accumulates that can form a soil. The conservation potential of El Monterín is very big, which invites to focus the actions on the increase of the biodiversity of the relict forest of this unique space.
