CHAMOIS REINTRODUCTION
The chamois (Rupicapra pyrenaica) is a goat-like bovine. Males and females have small black curved horns. Its head and throat show a light colour, while in the area of the eyes a darker stain can be seen as a mask.
The body maintains a uniform colouring, only altered by a line running down its back. The characteristics of the coat of the chamois vary with the seasons. In the summer it is short and reddish grey, while in the winter it becomes longer and thicker, with an almost black colour on the flanks and on both sides of the neck.
Sexual dimorphism is especially noticeable in the Cantabrian chamois (Rupicapra Pyrenaica parva), a subspecies that has been reintroduced in the Eastern Mountain of Cantabria. The males are larger than the females, and their horns reach a greater size and thickness. As a reference, adult chamois – regardless of their sex – usually exceed one metre in length, reaching 70 cm in height; they weigh between 25 and 35 kg.
