The Trashumancia e Nature Association is the owner of the area that represents the first Private Reserve in Portugal, which extends over 800 hectares in the Côa Valley Special Protection Area, located in the Guarda District (Central Region). This is a deep valley dug by the Côa River as it flows towards the Douro, to which it is a tributary. With an extension of 5 kilometres, in its cuts there is a wide variety of habitats. The rupicolous birds are the main faunistic attraction, with the presence of black stork, Egyptian vulture, griffon vulture, golden eagle, Bonelli’s eagle, eagle owl, European bee-eater or the black wheatear. The human relationship with the territory dates back to prehistoric times, as the cave engravings found in the area testify, with more than 22,000 years.
