NATIONAL PARKS
Monfragüe National Park is located in the province of Cáceres (Extremadura) and extends over 18,396 hectares. It was declared a National Park in 1979 by the Royal Decree 1927/1979 of April 4th. Subsequently, the area was also declared a Special Protection Area for Birds (1991), a Special Conservation Area (1998) and was included in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves in 2003. This set of conservation measures has made it possible to maintain and improve much of the natural, landscape and cultural wealth of the area.
The Monfragüe National Park is home to one of the best examples of Mediterranean woodland, although it has bioclimatic nuances of an Atlantic and continental nature. Some of these enclaves are limited to mountain and riverbank areas, alternating in an agricultural landscape transformed by traditional uses and developments.
Although the main feature of the area is the Mediterranean forest of quercines, with vegetation characteristic of temperate zones and the Mediterranean environment, throughout the Monfragüe area we can also find gallery forests, ash tree forests, juniper woods, oleander woods, reed beds and rocky outcrops.
In this sense, this geographical enclave favours the presence of numerous birds of community interest: eagle owl, black vulture, Egyptian vulture, black stork and short-toed eagle, among others. On the other hand, in the group of mammals, as an emblematic and almost extinct species, we find the Iberian lynx; there is also evidence of three bats: Mehely’s horseshoe bat, greater Mouse-eared bat and Bent-winged bat; and a rodent, the Mediterranean voles.
