MONFRAGUE BIOSPHERE RESERVE
Entirely located in Cáceres, it covers an area of some 115,000 hectares and includes 14 municipalities. It was officially declared in 2003 and it is managed by the Autonomous Community of Extremadura. It was promoted as a showcase for the Mediterranean landscape, the harmony between vegetation, natural values and the progressive and balanced intervention of man in its meadows.
It includes the Monfragüe National Park, the Monfragüe SCI and the Monfragüe SPA and the surrounding pasturelands. The main natural value of Monfragüe is its ornithological richness, with some of the largest colonies of black vulture, black stork, eagle owl or Spanish imperial eagle in Europe and even the world.
The flora also occupies a prominent place, with a number of nearly 1,300 different taxa. Its location, in an area of transition between the south and the north, favours the existence of endemisms and minority formations such as Flueggea tinctoria, European nettle tree, etc,
The municipalities included in the Reserve also have a great artistic heritage with Gothic-Renaissance churches, four of which have been declared Properties of Cultural Interest. In addition, there are three bridges of historical interest, Cardinal’s Bridge (1450) and Albalat Bridge (16th century) both over the Tagus River and the bridge over the Almonte River (15th and 16th centuries) in Jaraicejo.
The most important conservation activities are the elimination of 1,255 hectares of eucalyptus trees and the recovery of the native vegetation that existed there before they were planted four decades ago.
