POPULATION CENTRES
The human presence in the Iberian West is very limited, with few settlements that can be called “urban”. The population density of the area as a whole is barely 18-20 inhabitants/km2. To get a correct idea of what these population densities mean, they can be compared with the European numbers ( 114 inhabitants/km2 for the whole of the EU-27) or national (93.51 inhabitants/km2 in Spain and 114.3 inhabitants/km2 in Portugal, in the European average). This situation is the result of an uninterrupted negative population trend in the whole of the area of action, both in Spain and in Portugal. This population drain continues and does not seem to have short-term prospects of stopping, but quite the opposite, increasing the rate of aging every day, with the exception of regional capitals and service centres such as Ciudad Rodrigo or Castelo Branco.
